Mediation in schools encourages all involved to take an active part in looking constructively at peaceful solutions. Teachers are often faced with the need to sort out disputes between students and in doing so they may well be using mediation skills. However resolving disputes is very time consuming and can be very frustrating. Through the emphasis on personal responsibility and thinking carefully about ways of dealing with conflict, young people can be taught that solutions to conflicts need not be violent ones. It has been shown that many disputes can be resolved by students using peer mediation without the need to involve teachers directly.
