There are always 2 mediators doing a mediation session
In a mediation usually the mediators sit beside each other, with the two people who are in conflict sitting opposite each other.
Then the mediators work through the following steps:
Let’s Mediate
Step 1: Agree to Mediate
Say who you are and ask their names (if you don’t already know)
Say that mediation helps you sort out your problem.
Say that Mediators don’t take sides
Mediators will not say what you should do
Mediators will keep what is said private
Say what the rules are
No swearing or name calling
No interrupting
Try not to blame or accuse the other person
Ask if they agree to the rules.
Step 2: Find out what has happened
Ask the first person to tell their side of the story
Listen carefully
Ask the second person to tell their side of the story
Listen carefully
Ask how they feel about what has happened and about what has been said
Step 3: List the problems
List all the problems that need to be sorted out.
(you can ask the people what they think are the problems)
Step 4: Get an agreement
Think of possible ideas that both people could agree to so that they sort the problem out.
Step 5: Settle the agreement
Write out the agreement so that each person remembers.
Ask if they would like to shake hands.
