Firstly you will need to get the agreement of your teachers because they will have to train pupils to be mediators. You can tell them to look at the teacher part of this website. There is a book your school can buy which has the training in it. Your teacher will find details about this in the teacher’s section.
There is a 9 week Personal Social Education (PSE) Programme (sometimes this class is called Pastoral Care class, Tutor class or Form class). This outlines what mediation is and teaches some of the skills needed for mediation for example listening skills. Everyone in the year group should do these because peer mediation teaches us skills which are useful even if we never become actual peer mediators, it also means everyone knows what happens in mediation.
Following this anyone who wants to be a mediator should fill out an application form. Sometimes if there are too many people who want to be mediators your school will have to choose a certain number of people. To do this they may have to interview all those who have applied.
Once mediators have been chosen they will do 2 days of training where they will practice being mediators and look at how they can deal with difficult situations.
Then you will need to think about how you can let people know you have a peer mediation service available in your school. You could advertise it on posters or put it into your school newsletter. You could also make an announcement in the school assembly and do a role play to remind students what it is about.
You should make out a rota of mediators so that you know who is on duty each day.Anyone who wants to come for mediation could either just come to the mediators who are on duty or they could fill out a form asking for mediation. You need to decide where to keep these forms for example in the class room, in the reception and where they should be returned. Some schools have a peer mediation post box for returned forms. The students can then be given an appointment time and told where the mediation will take place.
